Euskadi / Basque Country

Tour overview

There’s no room for more. Because it’s hard to find so many stunning places so close to one another. The Basque Country is the ideal place to enjoy numerous attractions in a short space of time: varied landscapes, pleasant climate, ancient culture, world cuisine…
Two colors will accompany you on your journey through the Basque Country: the green of the incomparable setting of its mountains and valleys, and the blue of the sea.
You will see that the Basque people have strong links with these natural environments: land and sea. Both have been determining factors in a lifestyle revealed by their idiosyncrasies: deeply rooted customs, a rich culture, traditional sports…
If you find the coastal and inland villages interesting, you will be no less fascinated by the three capitals.

Bilbao will surprise you with its transformation from an industrial city to an avant-garde metropolis bringing together the great contemporary international architects.

San Sebastian, exquisite and unique, will seduce you with its beautiful and stately setting.

Vitoria-Gasteiz will show you its rich heritage and why it sets a worldwide benchmark in urban planning.

Eating and drinking well is an affordable luxury in the Basque Country: local seasonal products in ‘pintxo’ form with a good wine from the Rioja Alavesa, txakoli or cider. You will be in gourmet paradise!

Enjoy! Experiment, observe, then give way to the passion of taste.

ITINERARY (Example for 5 nights)

We suggest the best place to start exploring Bilbao from is right in the very heart of the city, the Old Quarter and the Seven Streets.
We highlight those visits:

  • Mount Artxanda, a natural viewpoint affording views of the city at your feet, as if you were getting a bird´s eye view so to speak. You can try to make out the most iconic buildings that make up the Bilbao skyline.
  • BILBOAT: This route starts & ends in the same jetty of Pio Baroja and its duration is about two hours. In this tour you will visit the points of interest of the Navegando Bilbao route, plus a trip along the estuary to the Puente Bizkaia area in Portugalete.
  • Gastronomic visits. “Txikiteo” – «Txikitear» (having a few wines) in these streets is a must. You will encounter a universe imbued with a special atmosphere: that of the “pintxos”.

An iconic Museum work of the renowned architect Frank O. Gehry. Turned into the symbol of the new Bilbao, Guggenheim Bilbao Museum presents one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the century.

Getxo offers a 10 km-landscape with cliffs, coast and beaches.

  • Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which contains a four-keyboard organ.
  • Punta Galea promenade, this promenade we can walk from Getxo to Sopelana observing interesting elements such as the mill of Aixerrota or the Galea fortress (18th century).
  • Vizcaya Bridge: Declared a World Heritage Site, it is a type of transporter bridge, also known as hanging bridge, facing impending extinction and whose construction shares similarities with the Eiffel Tower.

In the middle of the Basque coast, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is catalogued as protected biotope and far from any urban nucleus.

This idyllic place is located between the coastal towns of Bakio and Bermeo joined to the coast by a stone bridge and a 241-step staircase.

We are not exaggerating if we state that San Sebastián is the temple of the pintxo. In every neighborhood we will notice that scores of establishments some attached to tradition, while others offering original and innovative gastronomic jewels, exhibit tempting delicious counters.

We highlight those visits and activities:

  • Bay of La Concha
  • Peine del Viento, an impressive large-scale sculpture by Eduardo Chillida and Peña Gantxegi which speaks of the ferocity of the Bay of Biscay.
  • Funicular of Igeldo: Another way to get to know the city is to climb the Igeldo funicular, this funicular is the most popular means of transport to get to the top of Mount Igueldo.
  • Astigarraga, Museo Sagardoetxea, the ideal place to know the culture of cider in the Basque Country.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is friendly and convenient, designed for living in: everything is close at hand, including the so-called Green Ring, a perimeter around the city formed by six large parks you can explore on foot or by bicycle.

  • Gothic Cathedral of Santa María. It was built in the late 13th century and all throughout the 14th century. Of Gothic style, it was conceived as a church-fortress, with great volume and enclosed appearance, being part of the city’s defenses.
  • Walls in Vitoria-Gasteiz, whose origins predate the eleventh century, dating back to the early medieval fortifications of the Medieval Almond.
  • Visit Marques de Rical Winery
  • El Fabulista Winery

TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL (if your trip have same dates)
They are particularly important celebrations and highlight festivals with religious, cultural and gastronomic connotations.

Free days to enjoy the commercial streets.
